1.1 Introduction to the course

Welcome to Jewelry Modeling!

I´m happy that you are here; let's see what you will learn, how we will work, and some requirements for the course, please scroll down to find more!

What you will learn:

Here, you will develop new modeling skills with the help of Rhino 7 while learning the basic and initial process of jewelry design and production.

Then, we will go over the theory, from jewelry typology and ring anatomy to basic tools for hand and digital sketching.

You will learn about the manufacturing process and modeling parameters for prototyping and production in order to model emblematic rings step by step that range from simple shapes to the application of gems.

Once we go over the modeling phase we will start with the preparation and presentation of our piece, you will learn how to create base layouts and blueprints, and prepare your model for printing and rendering.

How we will work:

Each chapter is divided by a topic, we will begin with an overview of Rhino 7 and the most useful commands for jewelry modeling.

After chapter 2 we will begin with a design style process, in this order, we will talk about:

  • Jewelry Theory and ring anatomy
  • Sketching: Manual and Digital
  • Jewelry manufacture process
  • Prototyping and modeling parameters
  • Modeling step-by-step simple pieces
  • Modeling step-by-step pieces with gems application.
  • Blueprints and layouts
  • Rendering and export
  • Sub-D
  • Plus a demonstration for our next course!

Presentation of the course content:

In each chapter you will find videos that will guide you through the course, showing you the material and the tools you can follow up with some quizzes once in a while. You can follow the course at your own pace.

The videos have a short to medium duration and you can change their speed of them.

The full video content of the course is around 4 hrs and 10 minutes.

Activities and homework:

During the course you will have to do a few activities and homework that you need to upload so we can see your progress. You can upload your homework in the comments section which will be reviewed briefly after you upload it.

Requirements and programs:

This course is for anyone who wants to learn jewelry and 3D modeling and you do not need previous experience in Jewelry, here we will talk about it step by step.

You must have Rhino 7 installed on your computer to follow the exercises and tools that we will see. You can download the 90-day Rhino trial here or purchase it here.

The video tutorials take place on a
Windows platform, if you use Rhino for Mac you can easily follow them.

For more information about the program requirements, check them out here https://www.rhino3d.com/7/system-requirements/

In addition to rhino, we will talk about a program that will help us in the design and development of new pieces: Sketchbook Pro.

Sketchbook is a sketching and 2D design program, I recommend it for being an easy-to-use system, it has multiple tools that you can easily learn to develop without the need for plug-ins, and there you can express your ideas or notes without problems.

If you use this program or have a similar sketching program, such as Concepts you are welcome to use it to follow the course exercises.

Furthermore, to demonstrate the digital sketching for this course, I will use a drawing tablet so you can see in full detail what you can do with the program. (Note: the tablet is not a requirement, but If you are interested in digital sketching you can acquire it, and If you like you can contact me to talk about this topic in detail.)

Without anything else for the moment,

Let's start the course!
